5 Essential Oils for Winter Wellness + Recipes for Your Diffuser

Recently I’ve been excited about finding ways to integrate essential oils into my holistic health routine. These aromatic oils have powerful healing benefits as they can be coaxed from any part of a plant, including seeds, bark, roots, stems, flowers and leaves. Essential oils have a long history in the realms of beauty, spirituality and health. They not only fight off infection, but keep our body’s systems functioning in peak condition and calm our stress.

“An essential oil is a concentrated essence that is extracted from plants by steam distillation,” explains Dr. Kannankeril, a doctor of naturopathy. “Oils are referred to as essences, volatile oils or ethereal oils. They are all highly concentrated substances extracted from aromatic plants from around the world.”

With my newly gained knowledge of these elements, I have been creating sweet, spicy scents, perfect for the cold months, by diffusing 100% pure essential oil blends. Not only do I enjoy the cozy scents in my home, but I am in desperate need of the anti-fungal, antibacterial, antiviral and antiseptic properties diffusing offers — with Jack Frost nipping at my nose and all!

Below are my top 5 winter wellness essential oils, ways to use them and recipes that I fuse during the cold months! Enjoy!

1. Peppermint

A best-seller, and currently one of my favorites, peppermint essential oil promotes healthy respiratory function, relieves headaches and boosts energy. Literally, there are few body, health, and mind issues that it cannot aid. Plus, it smells like candy canes!

Winter Wellness Uses:

  • Rub a drop of peppermint oil between hands and use the inhalation method for clearer breathing + an all-natural pick-me-up.
  • Add a few drops of peppermint oil to your favorite smoothie, tea or hot chocolate for a minty twist.
  • Combine a drop of peppermint oil plus a drop of lemon oil in water for a refreshing mouth rinse —shout out to those antimicrobial properties!

Candy Cane Diffuser Blend:

  • 5 drops peppermint essential oil
  • 2 drops spearmint essential oil
  • 3 drops sweet orange essential oil

2. Clove

Known for its powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, clove essential oil is traditionally used for immune, cardiovascular and digestive support, as well as a food supplement for flavoring (if the quality is high). Aromatically, it may also be encouraging, promoting one’s healing, and stimulating their mind.

Winter Wellness Uses:

  • Dilute and massage over the liver or into the reflex points of the feet to support detoxification.
  • Take in veggie capsules to boost immunity during the winter.
  • Add one drop to toothpaste to promote oral health.

Cuddle by the Fire Diffuser Blend:

  • 2 drops white fir essential oil
  • 2 drops cinnamon essential oil
  • 1 drop clove essential oil
  • 1 drop cedarwood essential oil

3. Lemon

Lemon essential oil is best known for it’s ability to cleanse toxins from any part of the body and is widely used to stimulate lymph drainage,  rejuvenate energy, and purify skin. It’s also fantastic for cleaning and disinfecting surfaces and cleansing the air.

Winter Wellness Uses:

  • Add 40 drops lemon oil and 20 drops tea tree oil to a 16-oz spray bottle fill with pure water (and a little bit of white vinegar) for a healthier cleaning alternative.
  • Put a drop of lemon in the bottom of a mug and add 6-8 oz of near-boiling water for a warm, cleansing morning drink.
  • Use 3-4 drops of lemon in a diffuser to boost your mood when l depression starts to show its ugly face.
Respiratory Support Diffuser Blend:
  • 1 drop lemon essential oil.
  • 1 drop eucalyptus essential oil.
  • 2 drops peppermint essential oil.
  • 1 drop rosemary essential oil.

4. Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus essential oil relieves mental exhaustion, clears nasal passages, and eliminates harmful airborne bacteria. It is most popular for its soothing, stimulating, and anti-bacterial properties and can be used to relieve pain, protect against infection, and rejuvenate sore muscles.

Winter Wellness Uses:

  • Mix with a carrier oil (I use coconut oil because duhh!) and rub on chest to assist with clear breathing.
  • For cold and sinus headache relief, dab a drop of diluted eucalyptus oil onto the temples.
  • While showering, place a few drops in the hands, place over nose, and inhale deeply to clear the mind and promote clear breathing.

Nasal Relief Diffuser Blend:

  • 3 drops eucalyptus essential oil
  • 2 drops lavender essential oil
  • 2 drop peppermint essential oil

5. Lavendar

Lavender essential oil, also one of my absolute favs, can help support better sleep, which allows the body to heal and restore. It has a calming scent that makes it an excellent tonic for the nerves, and it is helpful in treating migraine headaches, depression, nervous tension, anxiety issues and emotional stress.

Winter Wellness Uses:

  • Rub 2-3 drops of lavender oil in hands and cup palms, then use the inhalation method to draw the scent all the way into the amygdala gland (the emotional warehouse) of the brain to calm the mind. Rub another drop of Lavender oil in palms and smooth on pillow to aid with sleep.
  • Mix several drops of Lavender oil with a carrier oil (coconut oil for the win!) and use topically on eczema and dermatitis. I have severe eczema and swear by this!
  • Put a drop of lavender oil on cold sores.

NOTE: I am confident using 100% pure essential oils from Whole Foods, pictured above, as they are not processed, diluted or manipulated in any way with solvents or other additives; however, there are tons of essential oil brands out there, so feel free to explore BUT do research before purchasing!! Also, the diffuser that keeps misting such amazingly beneficial scents into my home, and captured in this post, is sold here!

I hope you’ve enjoyed this list of essential oil benefits, uses and blends… I would love to know what your favorite diffuser recipes are, so let me know in the comments below! Happy Holidays friends, and I wish you unconditional love, health and prosperity from this moment forward!

Until next time…remember, everyone benefits when you love yourself. K?  – Myra
